Advent

Advent is the beginning of the Church Year—a season of preparation, hope, and reflection. For four weeks, we hear the promises of Scripture that point us to Christ’s coming: His coming in the manger at Bethlehem, His coming to us now through His Word and Sacraments, and His promised coming again in glory.

Within the Lutheran tradition, Advent is a time of quiet expectation rather than early celebration. The readings and hymns call us to repentance and to trust in God’s faithfulness, just as His people once waited for the Messiah. The lighting of the Advent wreath marks this journey week by week, reminding us that the Light of the world draws near.

Advent encourages the congregation to step out of the rush of the season and enter a rhythm of worship that looks both backward and forward—remembering God’s steadfast love and looking toward the fulfillment of His promises in Christ. By the time we reach Christmas, our celebration is deeper because we have taken time to prepare our hearts.
